Plasma plant sterol levels: another coronary heart disease risk factor?
نویسندگان
چکیده
The disorder Phytoterolemia is characterized by 50fold elevations in plasma plant sterol levels as well as tendon xanthomas and premature coronary heart disease.1 On pathological examination the xanthomas and arteries of these patients contain plant sterols.2 This has raised questions of whether plant sterols are proatherogenic and whether the “normal” variation of plasma plant sterol levels in the general population is a risk factor for coronary heart disease. The article by Wilund et al in the December 2004 issue of Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology attempts to answer both questions through a mouse atherosclerosis study and an epidemiological study.3

Evaluation of Apolipoprotein A5 Polymorphism in Coronary- Heart Disease Patients
Background and Objectives: Apolipoprotein A5 (APOA5) gene is important in determining plasma triglyceride levels, a major cardiovascular disease risk factor. Mutation in this gene affected plasma triglyceride level. We looked for possible associations of the APOA5 gene polymorphism S19W with coronary heart disease (CHD) in a sample of Iranian population. Materials and Methods: A total of 7...
متن کاملPlasma concentrations of plant sterols: physiology and relationship with coronary heart disease.
Recently, it has been questioned whether elevated levels of circulating plant sterols increase the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). To date, no definitive conclusions regarding such a relationship have been reached, nor have there been any studies summarizing the factors that contribute to the observed elevations in plant sterol concentrations in plasma. Thus, the purpose of this review is...
متن کاملIron levels in coronary heart disease patients without known risk factors
Background: Coronary heart disease is a common disease after adolescence. Strong epidemiological evidence is available that iron is an important factor in coronary artery disease. Therefore this study was done to assess the relationship between iron stores and coronary artery disease. Materials and methods: 208 subjects with cardiovascular disease were included in the study. Personal informati...

High plasma homocysteine is identified as an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Epidemiological studies have shown that increased plasma homocysteine is related to a higher risk of coronary heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disease. Homocysteine may have an effect on atherosclerosis by damaging the inner lining of arteries and promoting blood clots .Folic acid and oth...
متن کاملRapid Communication Plant Sterol-Fortified Orange Juice Effectively Lowers Cholesterol Levels in Mildly Hypercholesterolemic Healthy Individuals
Objective—Hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor for coronary artery disease. Therapeutic lifestyle changes include dietary modifications such as inclusion of phytosterols, which effectively lowers low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in margarines and other fats. Their effectiveness in nonfat moieties is not yet established. The aim of this study was to examine if phytosterols alter ...
